Web design research

The objective of this task was to research three websites in order to get an idea of the colour schemes that websites may use. I found that the majority of websites stick to simple colour schemes, consisting of around 3-4 colours on average. The colours and fonts used are not randomly chosen, colours always compliment each other and the fonts have inspiration of the websites main colour scheme.

I would describe the All Saints website to be; simple, sleek, professional and organized. This typography was inspired by the All Saints website, as the website has a very sleek and professional look I chose fonts that I thought would represent them very well. To keep with the All Saints theme I limited my colour palette choice to the colours found within the website, this also keeps within the whole idea of being professional and simple.
The typography used isn't too plain and boring, they all have small detailing involved which makes a huge difference, such as the curves used in the 'K' for sleek - it plays with the blocked straight font creating a more feminine look while still looking sleek.

I chose this typography because I was inspired by the Schön website which features a lot of simple blocked colours and shapes. The website gives off a very minimal modern feel, I would describe the website as being clean, sleek and simple. I kept with the Schön theme by using not only block typography but also typography that has some detailing to it, which looks more traditional, I feel this gives an interesting contrast between the two, Modern vs Old.  Again, when choosing the colour of the font it is best to stick to the colour scheme of the website, this gives it a very professional look without being too empowering. If however, I was to pick the typography for a title I would use blocked lettering, possibly in caps lock, which would either be black or a dark grey in order to really stand out.
I think using a light grey, almost white coloured font on a white background gives off a very clean look - white has always been associated with cleanliness and purity and I believe that I was able to achieve this.
Bape is a very modern 'minimalistic' brand that likes to play around with bold colouring on a very simple and plain product, which is also projected within their website. They have a very simple layout and design featuring a large coloured image in the centre to really stand out and attract the users attention. The colours used within the website I described as being; simple, Earthy and calm. I wanted to create typography that I thought represented the idea of simplicity, calmness and have an earthy feel. Firstly plain block lettering is the simplest way to go, however you can make it really stand out and not so boring depending on the colour used. For this I used a light grey which stands out but also isn't too empowering so it sticks to the idea of calmness. By just adding a full stop at the end I feel that it turns the whole concept of boring simplicity around and gives it a bit more attitude.  If I was looking to make a big statement I would have used the same font but in black, black text on a white background creates a big focus because of the light and dark contrast - but the Bape website doesn't use any black, only variations of grey, so instead of black I'd used a dark grey if I was working for Bape.
The idea of having the word calm written in very simple block typography and then ombre from a light grey to an even lighter grey - almost white colour, has a very calming look and feel. It is such a simple idea but has a very big impact on the user.
Playing around with the earthy brown colour of the bape logo, which is used throughout their website I used a font that looks slightly messy, as if it could have been written in mud. This typography breaks away from the typical simple and modern theme of the website and creates a nice contrast but still fits into earthy side of the bape theme.
